ZOOM WORKSHOP RECORDING

Date: April 8, 2026

Instructor: Linda Schultz

Workshop Description: Tessellations are shapes which can fill a surface without gaps or overlapping, famously used in the artwork of M. C. Escher. Tessellation designs are often appealing and are especially suited to weaving designs.

A single shape is repeated, then flipped, rotated or moved to interlock with itself in different ways. I will describe the different types of symmetry operations, specific to weaving drafts, which are used to create tessellations. Then different software options for creating tessellating designs will be explored. Several options for translating the designs into different kinds of weave structures which maximize the use of the available shafts will be demonstrated.

Participants can follow along and create their own tessellating designs using Fiberworks Silver (a demo version may be downloaded and used for free).

Prerequisites:

  • Advanced beginner to Intermediate
  • Familiarity with weaving drafts and weaving software
  • Suitable for 8+ shafts, but options for 4 shafts

Attendee Limit: Unlimited

Instructor Bio: Linda Schultz has been weaving for over fifty years, learning to weave as a child from her mother who is also an avid weaver. She has always been fascinated with weave structures and block designs, finding ways to maximize the potential for patterns on four shafts before moving on to multi-shaft looms. For the last 20+ years, she has been exploring the interaction of colour and structure to develop increasingly complex designs, with the assistance of Fiberworks and Photoshop software. Linda has published numerous articles in the Complex Weavers Journal on double weave, tessellations, double two-tie unit weaves, turned tie-weaves, and parallel weaves. She has had her work accepted into regional, national and international juried shows, and won awards for her work, including the Complex Weavers Award. She has taught in-person and Zoom classes on tessellations, Fiberworks, double two-tie unit weaves, and double weave.
