IN PERSON WORKSHOP
Date: April 14, 2027
Instructor: Gretchen Romey-Tanzer
Workshop Description:
Summer and Winter is an extremely versatile weave structure. The reversible nature of the fabric makes it a standard for kitchen towels and coverlets. Pleasing results can be developed with 4 shafts, though 8 shafts will give the weaver an almost unlimited design potential. It is usually a two-shuttle weave, one for the pattern weft and one for the ground weft. This workshop will focus on understanding and using block threading, tie-up variations (including skeleton tie-ups), and varied treadling sequences. Samples of other similar unit weave structures, such as Quigley, Bergman, and the Finnish Kuvikas structure will be on hand to share and understand. In the workshop we will be using graph paper and colored pencils to develop ideas that can be turned into working summer and winter drafts. Experimentation with color can lead to endless possibilities.
Students are requested to bring to class:
Lined paper, graph paper, pencils, small ruler, and samples of Summer and Winter you have woven and want to share with the class.
Materials/Handouts Fee: $ 7.50
Attendee Limit: 15
