IN PERSON 3-DAY WORKSHOP

Workshop Description: Interested in moving beyond tea towels, scarves, a bog jacket here or there, or perhaps re-purposing them into a different garment? Guided by a pre-workshop Information/Suggestions document and email contact with Liz Spear, participants will design their own garment project. Weave your cloth and select and test-fit your commercial or original pattern to successfully cut-n-sew a shirt, vest or jacket made of your handmade fabric that you will be proud to wear. Planning, piecing, closures, and various other construction topics will be presented and discussed, along with many garments, samples, stories and laughter.
Supplies: Students are requested to bring to class: - your handmade fabric, suitably finished, in quantity enough for your project- your chosen pattern: cut out, test-fitted, with sample garment, if illustrative of your project, with instructions- sufficient notions for your project: thread, buttons, interfacing(s), etc.- sewing machine, (plus serger, if desired) with extra needles, bobbins AND INSTRUCTION BOOK(s)- scissors, large and small, newly sharpened, and rotary cutter w/extra blade, if desired- favorite sewing tools: pins, hand-sewing needles, rulers, markers, tape measure, ripper, cutting mat, etc.- Surge protector and extra lamp, if desired- notebook, camera, note taking supplies, etc. Additional information will be sent upon registration.

Instructor Bio: Liz Spear is primarily a weaver of cloth and maker of comfortable and classic garments. Relocating to Western North Carolina in 1992, and the Professional Crafts Program at Haywood Community College helped focus her prior weaving, sewing and small business skills into LIZ SPEAR HANDWOVEN. Liz produces some 80 garments a year and teaches sewing workshops for weaving guilds and conferences, as well as maintaining memberships in fine craft and fiber organizations.
