ZOOM WORKSHOP

Date: March 11, 2026

Instructor: Nathan Vierling-Claassen

Workshop Description: In this hands-on workshop, we’ll learn a woven lace structure uniquely suited to the Rigid Heddle loom. This structure allows for intricate patterns but moves faster on the loom than you might expect, and is actually impossible to produce on most multi-shaft looms! The name, “Muck Lace,” was coined by its creator, David Xenakis as a tongue-in-cheek reference to not quite being Huck Lace. No prior Rigid Heddle experience is needed (i.e. multi-shaft weavers are very welcome!). Workshop participants must be familiar with weaving plain weave on a rigid heddle or multi-shaft loom. Participants will be able to try the technique on looms provided by the instructor, or those with their own can bring a pre-warped loom to start a sample or project during the class. See Notes below for bringing your own pre-warped loom.

Supplies: Pencil

Notes - For students working on their own RH looms:

Rigid Heddle Loom warped for plain weave as follows:

● 1.5 yard warp (or longer if desired), ● 92 ends ● 8/4 cotton in a light color

● 12 dent reed (10 dent is OK as an alternative)

● Two pickup sticks suitable for your loom, at least 10” long

● 1 stick shuttle or slim boat shuttle loaded with the same 8/4 cotton as your warp

● Loom stand if you prefer to work with a stand

Attendee Limit: 12

Instructor Bio: Nathan Vierling-Claassen has loved fiber crafts of all types since young childhood, first learning to weave as a preschooler on a potholder loom. While he worked in restoration of museum-quality textiles early in his career, he didn’t take up his own weaving in earnest until 2021 when he joined the Weavers’ Guild of Boston via the New and Occasional Weavers study group. As a long-time tinkerer and trained mathematician and scientist, Nathan particularly loves exploring how complex or interesting structures can be generated using simple equipment. He received the WGB Apprentice rating in 2023, and using loom and technique adaptations, he completed almost all of the ratings requirements on a Rigid Heddle loom (though to be honest, he’s also perfectly happy working on his 16-shaft floor loom!)
