ZOOM WORKSHOP

Date:  April 9, 2025

Instructor: Christine Miller

Workshop Description:  Whether you have been weaving, spinning, or dyeing for a long time or are just entering the exciting world of the fiber arts, your practice with process, technique, and concept can grow and deepen. Christine leads this interactive Zoom workshop illustrating ways to power up your individual practice through inquiry to unlock new ideas and pathways to explore using the 8 Studio Habits of Mind.

Attendees of the workshop will participate in both a large group Zoom environment led by Christine, and in break out rooms for smaller group discussion. We will all share our thoughts and insights about how we already use the Habits of Mind, or how we can deepen our practice with them.

Before the workshop begins, attendees will choose a person or idea that will be their central inspiration - this could be an artist, a material, a process, technique, weave structure, or an idea such as color. This inspiration will be the jumping off point for the attendee to use as we examine the 8 Studio Habits of Mind. Attendees will download Christine’s free resource ‘Fiber Art…Become the Artist You Want to Be’ before the workshop from her online studio https://christinekmillercourses.com. The Habits and concepts behind them come from Studio Thinking 3: The Real Benefits of Visual Arts Education, Sheridan, Kimberly M., et al. 2023. The research comes from Project Zero in the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

The in depth examination of these concepts along with an inspirational focal point will model for the attendee how they can work with the Studio Habits of Mind to deepen their creative practice of creating cloth, fiber artistic expressions, or build on their knowledge and practice of utilizing the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design.

Supplies: Please bring to class the free Handout
