IN PERSON WORKSHOP

Workshop Description: The workshop will start with compelling images of traditional Scandinavian textile embellishments. The instructor will demonstrate techniques for students to try later, with a booklet for instruction. Small kits will be provided for a class project to demonstrate the magic of wool yarn and steam, and each student will make a keepsake pompom-topped pincushion.

Instructor Bio: Robbie LaFleur has been following a thread of Scandinavian textiles since she studied weaving at Valdres Husflidsskole in Fagernes, Norway, in 1977. Her projects include interpreting Edvard Munch’s “Scream” painting into various textile techniques, weaving tapestry portraits of her relatives, and continuing exploration of various Norwegian weaving techniques. She is a Gold Medalist in weaving from the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum, coordinates the Weavers Guild of Minnesota Scandinavian Weavers Study Group, and publishes the digital Norwegian Textile Letter (http://norwegiantextileletter.com). She was a fellow with the American Scandinavian Foundation in 2019 and traveled to Stavanger, Norway, to study Hansen’s open-warp transparency technique.
