NOTE OUR REFUND POLICY

If you withdraw:

In-Person and Zoom Workshops:  

  • One month or more prior to the workshop you will be offered a choice to receive a refund, less our processing costs, or a credit to apply to another workshop. 

  • Between one month and two weeks prior to the workshop you will receive a credit to apply to another workshop.  

  • Within two weeks of the workshop date, workshop fees will not be refunded.

3-Day/3-Session Workshops: (in-person or Zoom)

  • One month or more prior to the workshop you will  receive a refund, less our processing costs. 

  • Between one month and two weeks prior to the workshop you will receive a refund (minus fees) only if your spot can be filled.

  • Within two weeks of the workshop date, fees will not be refunded.

Otherwise:

Double/Triple Registration:

  • If you register multiple times for the same workshop you will receive a credit toward another workshop and no refund.

Books and Monographs:  

  • We do not accept returns on books or monographs.

Dues:  

  • Dues and Fees will not be refunded.

Deflected Double Weave - Connections, Layers, & Pockets
ZOOM WORKSHOP

Workshop Description: Although Deflected Double Weave (DDW) has been around for quite a long time, it has become an admired weave structure in the past few years due to many weavers exploring additional design variations. I have been exploring DDW for several years and will share my designs with you in this Zoom workshop by WGB. Join the DDW fun and discover what you can do with this structure!
DDW appears more complicated than it is. DDW consists of a plain weave, and warp and weft floats on eight shafts. It is usually threaded in an odd/even fashion, making weaving traditional double layers of cloth possible. These layers can be integrated with DDW in many exciting ways. Dramatic designs for scarves and shawls can be woven using the same threading. In addition, using a versatile skeleton tie-up on a floor loom allows weaving DDW with two layers without retying treadles. Comparable lift plans on a table loom also work well.
 
Note: The Workshop Recording link will be a progressive compilation and made available soon after each Saturday for all attendees (ZOOM and VIDEO ONLY) after each class.  People registered for VIDEO ONLY will not have the benefit of interaction with Janney during the class.  Full access to the recordings is granted through Feb 9, 2025.
 
Warping instructions will be sent out six weeks before the course. Six designs based on four shaft twill profile designs are available. Detailed instructions for yarn choices and warping your loom from a profile or thread-by-thread design are included. Treadling sequences based primarily on a twill gamp are numerous and will be discussed in class. Handouts will be sent out one week before the course.
This course will be given in three parts, with time in between to weave on your loom at home. We will begin with a brief “Meet and Greet” on Zoom to introduce ourselves, answer any questions, and discuss the course overview.
Generally, sessions will run from 10-12 and 2:00-3:30 on three consecutive Saturdays. Suggestions for weaving between the classes will be given at the end of the sessions. This should keep all of us close to being on the same page for the next class. I am available by text or email in between sessions should questions arise. It is proposed that participants will be willing and able to screen share their progress at the sessions with others to discuss design decisions, color choices, selvedge management, and the like.
 
Supplies: a pre-warped loom with 8 or more shafts, boat shuttles and bobbins, and the handout.

Instructor Bio:  Janney Simpson began weaving in the early 1980’s. While living in CT, she taught weaving at Wesleyan Potters for many years. Janney is a past President, Apprentice, Weaver of Distinction, and Lifetime Member of the Handweavers’ Guild of CT.
Now in Michigan full-time, she is currently teaching weaving at her studio in “The Barn” in Gaylord, MI. She relishes the "ah-ha" moment when new weavers throw a shuttle for the first time and return to learn more. She volunteers as VP/Program Chair of Michigan League of Handweavers.
Additional memberships include Complex Weavers, Handweavers Guild of America, Charlevoix Weavers Guild, Cross Borders, Loose Threads, and Cross Country Weavers. She has presented many workshops and lectures on Deflected Double Weave, Finishing and Embellishing Handwovens, Knitted Beaded Bags, Sakiori, and Weaving with Fibers of Micronesia.
