ZOOM WORKSHOP RECORDING

Date: November 12, 2025

Instructor: Jamie Hurlburt

Workshop Description: Crackle is a very practical structure, with short floats that won’t snag in a tea towel. It’s also an incredibly versatile structure, with more treadling options than any other style of weaving I’ve found. That same threading that makes a sturdy tea towel can be woven off as lace or as twill, turned into a polychrome rainbow, or treadled for honeycomb. This balance between crackle’s practical and creative possibilities makes it extremely rewarding for weavers.

In this talk, I’ll start with the basics: explaining how crackle threading blocks and designs work. We’ll look at how crackle compares to overshot, and how it is based in twill. Once we’re all comfortable with the nuts and bolts of crackle, we’ll explore fun treadling options! By the end of the workshop, everyone will be more confident to weave existing crackle patterns, play with creative treadling, and maybe even design your own crackle.

Instructor Bio: Jamie Hurlburt teaches, writes, and designs patterns for Gather Textiles in Edmonton, AB. A regular contributor to WEFT Magazine, Jamie is also beginning to write weaving books. Gather is putting out our first book, The Best Weaving Advice that Nobody Listens To in 2025, and we are hard at work on a full re-weave and colour re-print of Marguerite Porter Davison’s classic A Handweaver’s Pattern Directory. When not weaving, Jamie teaches research and writing at a community college, raises a spirited nine-year-old, and enjoys getting outside for long walks no matter how cold it gets!
