Instructor: Deb Watson
Workshop Description: Andean Hakima Weaving Part 1 & 2
In this two-session class, we will learn to weave hakimas, the small, narrow bands that are the first weavings of young Andean girls and through which they learn the basic patterns and techniques they will later use as they progress to larger, wider looms. We will begin with a prepared warp for each participant in order to learn the smallest pattern and the techniques, and then learn to set up a warp ourselves (first session). Although it is not necessary to finish the band between classes, I would hope that participants would practice a little in the interim. In the second class, we will troubleshoot any problems with our hakimas, review warping, and, I hope, move on to a wider band. We will also cover finishing techniques, mostly simple 3- and 4- strand braids. Weavers can work at their own pace, and I will give lots of individual attention. I will bring some of my Peruvian textiles to illustrate the amazing weaving done on backstrap looms by weavers whose patterns are stored entirely in their heads and hands and how cloth and Andean culture are inseparable. In danger of disappearing, this tradition has been revived by Nilda Callanaupa of Cusco, Peru, who works with weavers in remote villages in the Cusco area to ensure that they keep weaving and receive fair remuneration for their work. I will also bring scrapbooks of my trip and other beautiful books.
Registration: NO late registrations. Since I am making up the initial warps, I have to know at least a week in advance if you plan to take the class.
Supplies: All materials will be supplied
Materials/Handouts Fee: $12
Attendee Limit: 10
Instructor Bio: Deb Watson learned Andean weaving from the late Ed Franquemont, an anthropologist who lived and worked in the Andean town of Chinchero, Peru, for over 20 years. Deb taught with Ed at SOAR (Spin-Off Autumn Retreat), at NEWS, and at MIT in the Integrated Studies Program (Humanities Dept.) for freshmen. On a trip to Peru in 2002, she visited the remote villages in which Nilda works. Deb received her Master Weaver Certificate from WGB in 2011.
