IN PERSON WORKSHOP
Date: November 11, 2026
Instructor: Laurie Autio
Workshop Description:
Twills come in a great variety of forms, interesting in themselves, but also useful as profiles for block weaves. While a wealth of information on twills is available, including design and tie-up variations, information on block weaves tends to focus on the ins and outs of learning the particular interlacement rather than design. Most of what is published and exhibited for block weaves consists of simple designs for straight or point arrangements of blocks. This lecture provides an overview of many twill threadings and treadlings, from skips, advancing, and irregular points, to interleaving and moiré; and twill tie-ups from regular to irregular, plaited to fancy. Each twill will include an application to one of many block and unit weaves, with most on 8 shafts or fewer.
Materials/Handouts Fee: $5.00
Attendee Limit: 20
Instructor Bio:
Laurie Autio began weaving in 1985 and enjoys all parts of weaving, particularly figuring out how design and structure work can be pushed. Music, crystallography, nature, and study of Japanese textiles influence her design work, and lace weaves are a passion. Her weaving education includes a Master Weaver Certificate from Hill Institute, serving as Coordinator of Study Groups for Complex Weavers, and a large library. Laurie began teaching in 1993 for various guilds, NEWS, Convergence, and Complex Weavers. In recent years she has run a four-year class called Explorations in Advanced Weaving. Laurie has served as President of Complex Weavers, Dean of Weavers Guild of Boston, President of Weavers of Western Mass., and Chair of Pioneer Valley Weavers. She enjoys writing and was co-editor of Interlaced (Weavers Guild of Boston) and editor of Eight Shafts: Beyond the Beginning, Personal Approaches to Design (Complex Weavers).
