ZOOM WORKSHOP
Date: October 8, 2025
Instructor: Phyllis Miller
Workshop Description: Sashiko-ori (woven sashiko) is a method for handweavers to produce in their own woven fabrics the patterns of traditionally hand stitched sashiko designs. The patterns often require 6 to 8 shafts (seldom 4) and consist of blocks of plain weave ground crossed by floats of pattern warp and/or weft threads. Attendees should be able to read a weaving draft and know how to thread a loom.
The program will --
- define and illustrate the three styles of Japanese sashiko
- illustrate supplemental hand stitching applications
- explain a way to classify threading plans
- describe ways to weave multiple sashiko designs by minor loom adjustments
- describe and illustrate sett, float and yarn considerations
- show some uses of color
- show some multi-pattern drafts
Attendee Limit: 22
Instructor Bio: Phyllis Miller began weaving in 1968. She has explored many aspects of weaving alone and in various workshops with leaders in the field. She participated in Lord & Taylor’s Savannah Style week in New York City, exhibited in Atlanta, Jacksonville, Savannah, and Minneapolis and has been published in Handwoven magazine, most recently with two articles on sashiko ori. Her interest in Japanese sashiko-ori grew from an appreciation of the rich tradition of Japanese textiles and their recurring representation of certain patterns. In 2018, when she recognized that the initial guide stitches in sashiko resembled a pattern of supplemental warp threads in handwoven cloth, she began to research and collect sashiko patterns and compile a portfolio of drafts and samples for weaving. As current interest in the topic has increased, she has begun teaching and collaborating with other weavers to explore the potential of sashiko-ori for contemporary weavers.
