ZOOM WORKSHOP

Date:  September 10, 2025

Instructor:  Sara Bixler

Workshop Description:  This workshop is intended to help you think beyond the obvious possibilities of a given threading and its' treadling variations. A perfect example is the numerous treadling’s you find for a threading draft in your favorite weaver's pattern book. You thread your warp to the desired pattern draft and then treadle it several different ways to achieve different pattern variations. But what if you could thread your loom to a simple threading and weave several different structures? This is exactly what we will do on a simple eight shaft straight draw twill threading.

Each student may prepare ahead of time a pre-warped loom starting with the simplest and obvious variations of Plain Weave, Basket Weave and Twills. We will then move on to weave Waffle Weave, Huck lace, Bronson Lace, Double Weave, Monk's Belt and Summer and Winter. Dozens of structures are possible on this simple threading of one to eight. By simply thinking through and changing the tie-up and lift combinations all these well-known weave structures are possible and many more with one threading. Imagine weaving a towel of Huck Lace and Twill borders. There is nothing worse than a long warp and a lack of inspiration on how to weave it off. But not anymore! following this workshop you will never experience Weaver's block again.

Supplies:  If you would like to weave along, prepare a pre-warped loom with the provided draft and recommended materials list. The instructor recommends a table loom with the ability to hand treadle versus having to change your tie-ups every few inches.

Attendee Limit: 20

Instructor Bio:  Sara is the owner and resident instructor of Red Stone Glen Fiber Arts Center. Many of Sara’s students praise her ability to guide students through the challenging world of color theory, specifically relating to weaving. Sara has spent many years experimenting with color in weaving focusing her studies on how color relationships are affected by yarn size, luster, sett and weave structure. She loves giving students core principles to follow so they become more confident in their color decisions when designing new pieces. Sara also strives to create new and different approaches to looking at plain weave fabrics through surface embellishments. Working primarily on a plain weave background Sara enjoys the challenge of investigating everything from ancient techniques for decorating fabrics to the use of more modern day yarns produced for novelty type applications. It never ceases to amaze Sara the endless possibilities using as little as 2 harnesses.
