About the Background Graphic

The draft and a woven sample of the fabric represented by the WGB Home Page's background graphic were included with the Winter 1996 Bulletin of the Weavers' Guild of Boston.

Marjie Thompson adapted the design of a 19th century towel woven on 16 shafts to 8 shafts. A sample woven from the original 16 shaft design was also included.

The design is what was known as "hin und wieder arbeit" to the Germans and was represented in their books and manuscripts by a tie-up only since the threading is in point order. These tie-ups represent a quarter of the pattern. Treadling, like threading, is in point order.

Most hin and wieders were drawn for 16 or more shafts and the resulting fabrics were used for table linens and women's everyday petticoats (in indigo and white). Some, but not all, of the designs can be scaled down as this one was.
