Tuition and Registration Information

The woven shibori process introduces the hand weaver to an exciting approach to their woven cloth with unlimited possibilities. By using the loom to make fabric as well as to make a resist for dyeing or shaping, it is a true melding of weaving and surface design. Participants will use a variety of woven structures to weave samples of cotton or other cellulose fibers and polyester. After the cloth is woven, we will explore ways in which the woven image can be applied to the cloth. Fabrics will be dyed using both immersion and direct application with fiber reactive dyes. Shaping will be done with polyester threads.

Catherine Ellis on Shibori

“Woven shibori has challenged all that I know about weaving and has led me to investigate new materials, resists, dyes and finishing processes. The fabrics I have produced include combinations of dyed cellulose fibers, wool felting and resist, permanent shaping with thermoplastics, and woven steel with heat treatment. Continued exploration of woven shibori and its applications will define and my guide my work for many years to come.”
